The journey took 5.5 hours |
On 30 January 2003, staff at Welwyn Garden City had nightmarish drives home due to heavy snowfall. Typically, my own journey of 20 miles would take 45 minutes, but on that evening we were allowed to leave earlier due to the forecast. I left about 4pm and made good progress in heavily falling snow until I reached the outskirts of Luton. The traffic from thereon was heavily snarled up with the M1 motorway and all other roads in the area gridlocked.
I eventually arrived home about 9.30pm — 5 and a half hours.
Local radio station, BBC Three Counties, was particularly comforting on that night; some of their staff were unable to make it in, and the station's afternoon staff stayed on. After all, they could hardly drive anywhere. It was a night to remember.
